Class descriptions

Tap

Enables the dancer to create percussive sound with their feet. Tap teaches the student rhythm, syncopation, and develops the students “ear”, much like a musician. Tap shoes are considered your instrument, with your bass and treble sounds. The rhythm and movement of tap, created by the metal taps on the heels and toes of a dancer’s shoes, transforms the dancer into a percussive musician, teaching the dancer to find rhythms and beats not only in music but in their own body. You are a musician as well as a dancer! Tap technique will be emphasized to enhance coordination and sound through warm-ups, rhythm exercises, combinations and floor work.  Beginning level classes focus on learning basic rhythm patterns starting with simple combinations that include shuffles, flaps, stomps, riffs, pullbacks, etc. Fundamentals of tap incorporate patterns, fast and intricate footwork.  Advanced levels combine these in more complex rhythm and mixed meter combinations enabling students to slide easily between the styles of such performers.  The goal is to develop tap dancers that are equally strong musicians, dancers, and performers.

Attire for Tap can be shorts, capris or jazz pants.  A leotard, unitard or form fitting top is required.  No baggy T-shirts.  Black tap shoes are required.

Contemporary

Contemporary class focuses on Ballet, Jazz and Lyrical technique as well as choreography and is devoted to lyrical/contemporary movement, which helps dancers tell a story with expression through their body and face. Contemporary dance educates, challenges and pushes students to reach new boundaries in becoming young artists by incorporating movement quality, improvisation, partner work and intricate music syncopation.  Students are taught to express themselves through movement of dance with across the floor combinations, tumbling, partnering, stretching and short combinations and typically encourages use of articulation, body line, weight, and movement qualities.  Students are encouraged to take a ballet and or jazz class in addition to this class.   Elements of improvisation are also introduced.

Attire for contemporary can be shorts, capris or jazz pants.  A leotard, unitard or form fitting top is required.  No baggy T-shirts.  Ballet, Jazz or socks can be worn.

Ballet

Ballet classes are the foundation for dance training and focus on developing a solid ballet technique with emphasis on understanding correct body placement, proper use of turn out, coordination of the upper body and use of arms. Ballet provides a formal classroom setting where dancers focus on technique while practicing discipline as students develop poise, grace & confidence.  The importance of strength, flexibility, rhythm, musicality and memorization are stressed at every level of ballet classes. Graceful formal ballet barre and center work are practiced as well as combinations being introduced with ballet terminology & continued focus on ballet positions of arms, legs, and feet. Leaps, turns, jumps, and overall technique will be emphasized in this class. Emphasis will be placed on understanding technique, as well as instilling an appreciation and enjoyment of the movement. Advanced levels are a continual study of fundamentals, core strength, rotation, alignment, and balance, but also extended to emotional expression and precision, as well as developing fluid artistic control. Ballet is the basis of all other dance forms and can strongly enhance any athletic activity.

Attire for Ballet is any solid color leotard and pink tights; skirts are optional.  Hair must be worn in a bun and ballet shoes are required.

Hip Hop

This is a fun, high-energy class, where students will learn combinations to upbeat, age-appropriate music and how to execute diverse styles and attitude. There is a less emphasis on structure as hip hop is more of a personal expression rather than a learned technique.  This class will introduce young students to the basic vocabulary and style of hip hop movement and can be taught to anyone with a passion to move. Isolations, popping, & free-style movement will all be a focus of this athletic and energetic dance style.   Students will use hip-hop to develop their coordination, rhythm, flexibility and self-expression. Great for fun, dance teams, dance technique and exercise!

Jazz classes will have a strong foundation in ballet with an emphasis on correct posture and technique. All classes focus on turns, jumps, leaps, increased flexibility, strength and an overall development of style as well as percussive disciplines, isolations, expression and musicality.  Classes begin with a warm-up to develop strength, flexibility, correct alignment and coordination followed by progressions across the floor and end with phrase work and combinations. Each level of jazz is a continuation of the previous level and increases in difficulty. The goal is to develop dancers who are expressive, dynamic, musical, and passionate.

Attire for Jazz can be shorts, capris or jazz pants.  A leotard, unitard or form fitting top is required.  No baggy T-shirts.  Jazz shoes are required

Hip Hoppers (Boys Only!)

Boys Only Hip Hop classes are a basic introduction to the urban street styles Our Boys Only classes offer a creative, athletic experience while developing coordination, dance and motor skills, and rhythm through movement and music.  Classes promote fitness and positive self-esteem, as well as building confidence to perform.  Warm-ups consist of teaching isolations of neck, shoulders, ribs, and hips as well as basic stretches to increase flexibility.  Since Pop N’ Lock revolves around the ability to move one part of the body and not the other, isolations will be a main focus of technique development for proper mastery.  Choreography will be taught to develop team work, teach spatial awareness through formations, and help build memorization skills as well as freestyle movements to give students the opportunity to develop their own sense of style.

Attire for boys can be athletic or seat pants with a fitted t-shirt.  No oversized or baggy t-shirts or sweatshirts.

Lyrical is a style of dance that uses the emotion and mood of the music to elicit movements from the dancers and uses ballet & jazz technique.  Students have a warm up focusing in core strength, flexibility, and movement of the back. The class includes floor work, progressions, and center combinations.
